Is Korea playing catch-up?
Korea has more factory robots per worker than any country on Earth: 1,220 per 10,000 manufacturing employees in 2024, #1 worldwide (IFR). On humanoids, though, Korea's own alliance launch framed the country as trailing the US and China and set out to close the gap.
KAIST Humanoid v0.9. Built at the DRCD Lab of Prof. Hae-Won Park, with arms from Prof. Jemin Hwangbo's RAILAB. In the lab's October 2026 video it spells "KAIST" on its own, pushing a 35 kg letter S and lifting 20 kg (including 6 kg of added weights), using onboard vision, deep reinforcement learning and human-demonstration learning. KAIST says its motors, reducers and drivers are built in-house. These are lab claims.
Samsung and Rainbow Robotics. Samsung became Rainbow's largest shareholder with a 35% stake (up from 14.7%). Rainbow was founded in 2011 by researchers from KAIST's HUBO Lab. Samsung says humanoids will work its own manufacturing lines first (company plan).
Hyundai and Boston Dynamics. Hyundai Motor Group owns 80% of Boston Dynamics. It says Atlas will start sequencing parts at its Georgia Metaplant from 2028, with a production system for 30,000 robots a year by 2028 (company targets).
The K-Humanoid Alliance. Launched by MOTIE (the trade and industry ministry) in April 2025 with 40+ members, it aims for a robot AI foundation model by 2028 and global leadership by 2030, with a 2025 robotics budget of KRW 200 billion (government figures).
Our take: Korea's lead is robot arms bolted to factory floors. Humanoids are an AI race. The hardware is ready. The brain isn't, yet.
